Some tech notes
MediaWiki earlier this month released version 1.7 as their new stable branch. The main compatibility change is that it requires PHP 5 which will leave many in the lurch. Couldn't they have waited a year before switching over? It's damn annoying.
No major feature changes other than experimental PostgreSQL support. I'll probably stick to the 1.6 branch for a while.

Google Code - Project Hosting was released. It looks simple in a Google with projects being organically categorized by tags. Each project also has it's own issue tracking system. There is also Subversion hosting for each project.
However, the Subversion repository browser is suprisingly shit. Why did they even bother when you can't even view the revision history?
----
Been watching a previous episode of Systm where they talk about and demonstrate Asterisk.
It's a good intro as it shows you the hardware you need and there's pretty computerized diagrams to get it into your head. I'm hoping that VOIP is something we can get into and offer at LavaNet. We have the expertise and support personel in house.
Be afraid, be very afraid.

Road test. Failed. OK, that was annoying... Driving into a brick wall.
Yesterday I took a Hawaii road test. I'd already passed the written test a couple of months ago.
I was considering going down to the testing center on the weekend and driving around the side streets to see how it was like. It probably would have been a waste of time because I failed on 3 aspects.
Speed. "You actually sped up while driving on residential roads."
Head checks. There's a bike lane, probably the only one on Oahu. It's hardly even noticeable before you indicate to turn right.
Stopping before the stop lines. "You're not stopping for other cars but you're stopping for pedestrians." I didn't want to explain that I already checked for pedestrians.
There was this extra gotcha where apparently there's this sign where you need to slow down to 10 miles before turning right.
So I'll need to wait a week before I can take another driving test.

Who killed the electric car?
This looks like an interesting documentary that is coming out this year. Look out for it.
Hawaii needs to do more recycling and to be more environmentally friendly. Maybe people don't realize that we live on a very small island and where the rubbish (and hazardous waste) actually goes.
In my local district (back in Oz), we had a weekly rubbish collection in a bin that looked like this:

The fortnighly recycling bin is twice the size and looks like this. There's a lot of items that could go in there:

Black holes and revelations
There's a black hole in my brain where I don't know certain things. Like if that vegetable is actually an artichoke... OK, so I got that right but I don't think I've ever eaten one.
I call it the mother tongue syndrome whereby I don't know what something is because my mum never brought it home and cooked it up.
